Outdoor Activities: Sound, Hearing & Voice

SOUND and auditory games can be integrated in our outdoor play and discovery with kids.

Engaging children’s sense of hearing can really help them to open their attention to even further than they can see. These games can also be very therapeutic for children who struggle with listening or auditory processing, and for children who are hard of hearing, or those using assistive listening devices.

Some games and ideas:

1. Ask them to close their eyes and describe only what they hear.

How many different streams of sound can they identify? (The wind, the rustle of leaves, a running water stream, crickets, birds, their own breathing, the swish of their sleeve or pant…)

This is a great way to introduce mindfulness as well. This can be facilitated by a bingo-like card, or for them to record the sounds they hear in their “outdoor journal.”

2. Use your voice!

When kids are outdoors in an open space, it is so wonderful for them to have the opportunity and freedom to use their “outdoor voices.” Encourage kids to scream and yell, and make as much noise as they like to release energy, and find their own power.

Play a game where two kids get further and further apart sending a “word” back and forth until they are so far they can’t hear what the word is/mishear. This makes for great giggles and is also a lesson in how sound travels, and use of their own vocal power.

3. What sound does it make?

Finding objects in their outdoor space and playing with their resonance, or what sounds they make can be really fun and educational. Ex: Slapping sticks against a tree bark makes a different sound than clicking pebbles or rocks. Crunching leaves, water flowing/dripping etc.

All these games and activities are excellent ways to engage the sense of children with the outdoors and with their environment.
