All About You! Episode 6

Welcome back to the All About Audiology podcast. I’m your host Dr. Lilach Saperstein and this is the All About YOU mini episode. In the last full episode, episode 5 we discussed the different kinds of hearing loss and different causes of hearing loss. This is where it started to get a bit technical, and I received one anonymous message that read:

“This episode was too confusing for me. So many technical terms, it went over my head. I liked the other episodes better.”

Now, I truly appreciate this comment because I understand how confusing and overwhelming all of this can be, and that’s exactly why I feel called to make this podcast and make this information accessible. And if I’m not hitting the mark, then I’m happy you’re letting me know, and I will continue to work to make it relevant and easier to understand.

On that note, I received a message from a fellow audiologist who also wished to remain anonymous; she wrote,

“I listened to the podcast today and loved it! I think you did a really great job with it, and it’s a much needed resource for people. I’m all for informing and educating the public, and breaking down the barriers to make audiology more accessible. Very impressive!”

So thank you for that. I can see how for another audiologist they can listen to it and say, “wow, you made it so accessible”, but for someone who is not familiar with audiology, can feel that it was very technical.

I do want to say that if you are at an audiologist’ office and you don’t understand what they are saying to you, ask questions. Ask how it relates to my life, or my child’s life, or my parent’s life. Learn to say, “Actually, I don’t know what you are talking about. Can you explain it in different words?” That kind of a skill, self advocacy of being able to ask a question and make sure that you understand what is being said to you by a medical professional, is what I am actually teaching. Not that you should understand all the technical words if they don’t apply to you.

Big news, I have been interviewed on another podcast, a wonderful podcast about navigating the challenges of parenting and education. It’s called the Raise a Legend Podcast. The host is a long time educator, Ray Fitzgerald and we had a great conversation about the different stages of auditory and language development throughout childhood and how to keep our kids’ ears clean and healthy. (Spoiler alert- don’t use Q-tips!)

You can listen to that episode over at or by searching ‘raisealegend’ in your podcast directory. If you want to see the full show notes on that episode, click here. Let me know what you think of our conversation.

You can always contact me at through the contact page, or leave a comment on any episode post. By the way, transcripts from every episode are available at so those who would like to read it can have it accessible. You can always send me a direct message on Instagram at @allaboutaudiologypodcast. I am always so excited to hear from you, and who knows, you might be on the next all about you episode!

Join us for the next episode which is all about your audiology appointment, and what you can expect and the different parts of the hearing test. That episode will be geared towards adults. In a future episode, we will discuss what to expect from an audiology appointment for your child and that varies greatly. So tune in next time! This has been the All about You episode 6. I’m Dr. Lilach Saperstein and this is the All About Audiology podcast.
